How are the tariffs impacting our sector?

So, it has now been a month since Canada announced counter-tariffs to the US tariffs. Public support for these counter-tariffs are still very high as we dig in – Canada Proud!  As Prime Minister Carney said when speaking about the unjustified US tariffs, “they are using our economic integration as a weapon.”  None of us want a trade war that raises prices for Canadians, but the overwhelming agreement is that we have to do something in return until we can get to a mutually-beneficial trade agreement that respects our sovereignty.

As your national association, we have been communicating the concerns of our utility sector to the federal government – to the Finance Minister and to our trade commissioner contacts. We have been working closely with our regional association partners as well to watch for provincial/territorial reactions.

Next week, in partnership wit the regional associations, we will be sending out a Notice about Tariffs along with a call for examples of impact.  The Notice is also included in this e-Bulletin.  We have shared a lot of federal information about the tariffs, counter-tariffs and relief programs.  We then ask for input about the effects of these tariffs on our sector.
